Tips For Operating a Successful Business

Author: John Heim

Whether the business you run is the traditional brick and mortar operation, a large chain store, a franchise business or a home based business the same principals apply. There are 4 basic principles of managing your business no matter the size. Plan, organize, direct and control, following is an overview of each.

1) Planning

This is the most basic of the principals for any size or type of business you are operating. What are you supposed to do? How are you going to get it all done? When will it get done? What is it you are trying to get done anyway? All these basic questions need to be answered if you expect to get anywhere with your business.

That is why the first step you need to take is to plan. Start by brainstorming about anything you think will need to be done with the particular business you have chosen. Be sure not to leave out the basics like setting a budget, listing your goals, zeroing in on just what the business will or will not do. Include anything you can think of in this stage.

2) Organizing

Now that you have a plan you need to organize it. Start with the big picture, what needs to be done on a monthly basis then break it down by the week and the day. Monthly items may include things like paying rent, the electric bill, purchasing supplies or paying for services.

You may want to use a monthly planning calendar, similar to a regular calendar with blank dates, to keep track of what needs doing when. When the task is completed then you can check it off and have a running list of accomplishments.

In this step you may also throw out some of the plans from step one. Remember, you were brainstorming, now that you are actually organizing your business some of these items may not fit your plan.

3) Directing

Directing means just that, keeping the plans that you have made, and then organized headed in the right direction. In the first two steps you have set up your business basics that will help guide your operation. Now it’s time to put them in action! Think of yourself as a coach, staying on the sidelines but directing what goes on out on the playing surface.

At first it takes more effort to get the ball rolling. It is a new venture and everything needs to be done. Don’t get discouraged, it is a lot of work to get started but many items like naming your business or getting an address will only have to be done once.

4) Controlling

It is your business, put together by you so who better else to control it. Control it, run it, take charge of it, basically it means you are the boss. It is now time to step up to the plate, take the reins and run your business.

The three steps you first completed must be kept in mind as guidelines to controlling the day to day operations. Remember your business basics are not set in stone, they can be changed. Even the best plans do not always work when put into action that is part of where the controlling comes in. If, after a period of time, a portion of your plan is not working then change it! Be sure to give it an ample amount of time to accurately pin point where the problem lies. Then you can simply go back to step one with just that problem area in mind and work through the process again,

Following the 4 points outlined above can help anyone build and operate a business, large or small. They apply to a traditional brick and mortar business or an online operation of any size. Just remember the key ingredient to the entire process is you!
